João Carlos é apenas metade de uma personagem complexa, mestre de muitas artes e ofícios. Assinando com os apelidos Celestino Gomes, é poeta, prosador e ensaísta, e também divulgador científico, na rádio, televisão e jornais, associado à sua profissão de médico higienista. Assinando João Carlos, pinta, ilustra e entalha a madeira. Eternamente enamorado por Ílhavo, onde nasce em 1899, conta e pinta a gesta heróica da comunidade piscatória e grafa a sua pitoresca linguagem. O traço sinuoso e preciso, a ausência de perspetiva e a ornamentação onírica e orientalizante que encontramos na sua produção gráfica são todo um programa de arte e vida do artista prolífico que espalha tinta-da-china em folclóricos quadros para revistas e jornais.
João Carlos is only half of a complex character, master of many arts and crafts. Signing with the nicknames Celestino Gomes, he is a poet, prose writer and essayist, and also a scientific populariser, on radio, television and newspapers, associated with his profession as a hygienist. Signing João Carlos, he paints, illustrates and carves the wood. Eternally in love with Ílhavo, where he was born in 1899, he tells and paints the heroic deed of the fishing community and writes its picturesque language. The sinuous and precise line, the lack of perspective and the dreamlike and orientalising ornamentation that we find in his graphic production are a whole program of art and life of the prolific artist who spreads Indian-ink in folkloric paintings for magazines and newspapers.
Através das 240 páginas deste livro dedicado à sua obra, João Carlos glosa as peripécias da história da Medicina em propaganda de laboratórios farmacêuticos e se devota à dramática biografia de santos e messias em livros e fascículos colecionáveis. Espiritual e humanista, fascinado pela gravura do japonês Hokusai, os Primitivos de Quatrocentos, as artes bizantina e oriental, e pelos XX Dessins do pintor Amadeo de Sousa Cardoso, João Carlos constrói, no seu horror ao vazio, uma emocionante epopeia gráfica, à margem do modernismo oficial e estilizado da «Política do Espírito» do Estado Novo. Faleceu em Lisboa em 1960.
Through the 240 pages of this book dedicated to his work, João Carlos glosses over the ups and downs of the history of Medicine in advertising for pharmaceutical laboratories and devotes himself to the dramatic biography of saints and messiahs in books and collectibles. Spiritual and humanist, fascinated by the engraving by the Japanese artist Hokusai, the Primitives of the 1400s, the Byzantine and Oriental arts, and by the XX Dessins by the painter Amadeo de Sousa Cardoso, João Carlos builds, in his horror of the void, an exciting graphic epic, on the side-lines of the official and stylized modernism of the Estado Novo's «Politics of the Spirit». He died in Lisbon in 1960.
